Signs Your Transmission Needs Repair
Your transmission plays a vital role in moving power from the engine to the wheels. When it begins to wear out, early attention can often prevent a small problem from becoming a major repair. Here are common signs your transmission may need service.
1. Slipping gears
A slipping transmission may unexpectedly change gears, struggle to stay in gear, or feel as though the engine is revving without the vehicle accelerating normally. This can make driving unpredictable and should be inspected promptly.
2. Delayed or harsh shifting
If your vehicle hesitates before moving after you shift into Drive or Reverse, or if gear changes feel hard, jerky, or unusually rough, the transmission may be experiencing a fluid, pressure, electrical, or internal problem.
3. Unusual noises
Whining, humming, buzzing, clunking, or grinding sounds can point to worn transmission components or low or contaminated fluid. Note when the noise occurs and whether it changes with speed or gear selection.
4. Transmission fluid leaks
Bright red, dark red, or brown fluid underneath your vehicle may be transmission fluid. A leak can lead to low fluid levels and serious damage, so it is best to have the source identified quickly.
5. Burning smell
A burning odor may result from overheated or deteriorated transmission fluid, or from an overheating transmission. Continuing to drive when the transmission is overheating can make the damage worse.
6. Warning lights
The check engine light or a transmission warning light can appear when the vehicle detects abnormal temperatures, pressure, sensors, or shifting behavior. Diagnostic testing can help identify the cause.
7. Trouble shifting into gear
Difficulty shifting into Drive, Reverse, or another gear may indicate a problem with the transmission, linkage, clutch system, or electronics. Do not force the shifter if it will not engage normally.
8. Shaking or vibration
Shuddering or vibration during acceleration or gear changes can be related to worn components, incorrect fluid, or other driveline concerns. An inspection can separate a transmission issue from a tire, axle, or engine problem.
What should you do?
If you notice one or more of these symptoms, schedule an inspection before the issue becomes more expensive. Write down the symptoms, when they occur, and any warning lights you see. If the vehicle will not move, is leaking heavily, or smells strongly of burning fluid, consider having it towed instead of driving it.
